This Week In Bakersfield Theatre - weekend of May 18th, 2008

The incredible Evita opens this weekend at CSUB for a two-week run and Spotlight School of Arts presents Home Is Where The Heart Is this weekend only.  The Curious Savage, Duck Hunter Shoots Angel, and How The West Was Really Won are all continuing.  They all three close next weekend, in fact.

LisaAnn needs actors to play for a one-night engagement in August, see the text under Auditions...and there is an Eagles cover band playing at Stars on Saturday.

The Spotlight has announced it's upcoming season (looks pretty great) and information on upcoming Summer Stock classes.  And don't forget Major League Improv...family-friendly comedy every Saturday.

The Curious Savage

Plays through May 25th

Written by John Patrick

Directed by Carla Stanley

May 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 24 @ 8PM
May 18, 25 @ 2PM

Mrs. Savage has been left ten million dollars by her husband and wants to make the best use of it, in spite of the efforts of her grown-up stepchildren to get their hands on it. These latter, knowing that the widow's wealth is now in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of it, commit her to a "sanatorium" hoping to "bring her to her senses." But Mrs. Savage is determined to establish a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams. In the sanatorium she meets various social misfits, men and women who just cannot adjust themselves to life, people who need the help Mrs. Savage can provide. In getting to know them, she realizes that she will find happiness with them and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them. But when the doctor tells her there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do anything for money. The self-seeking stepchildren are driven to distraction by their vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage, but she preserves her equanimity and leads them on a merry chase. At last her friends conspire to get rid of her stepchildren, and through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans. The last scene, a farewell party, is a delightful fantasy where each "guest" in the sanatorium realizes at last some hopeless dream for something he was never able to realize. The dominant mood is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.

Duck Hunter Shoots Angel

Plays through May 24th

Directed by Amy Hall

Duck Hunter Shoots Angel is the uproarious story of two bumbling Alabama brothers who have never shot a duck but think they shot an angel. As they lament their fates in a murky swamp, they are chased by a cynical tabloid journalist and his reluctant photographer who refuse to believe any of it until feathers, wings, and a tiara are discovered along the way. The play hysterically interweaves a love story, sibling rivalry, tawdry media, race relations and cultural stereotypes as the chase to find the angel builds to a crescendo in the swamp. Ultimately a sweet allegory about redemption, Duck Hunter has been hailed by audiences as a rare comedy with a surprisingly heartfelt lesson.

The cast includes Andrew Ansolabehere, Matthew Borton, Jennifer Hatzman, Bob Kempf, Bryan Maddern, Jason Monroe, Maurice Pittman, Beigher Taylor, and Natily Ray.

Performances are May 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, and 24 at 8:00PM.

How The West Was Really Won

Plays through May 24th

at The Gaslight Melodrama Theatre & Music Hall

Written by Arnie Carlos
Directed by Michael Prince

The old west is full of tales tall and small. Some might say the truth gets a bit blurred when they’re retold. But they wouldn’t say that if they were talking about ol’ Snake Willoughby, former Sheriff of Deadwater, AZ in the late 1880’s. Snake lived the kind of life that legends are made of. Watch as Snake relives some of his most daring battles and narrow escapes. From the arrest of Wild Bill to the defeat of Dastardly Diego, you will be in for a rip-roaring, side-splitting , rootin’-tootin’ hullabaloo. Chock full of a wild cast of characters and plenty of Melodrama action, this is one show the family won’t want to miss.

Followed by a brand new Vaudville Revue:

“Cowboy Up”
written by Arnie Carlos
musical direction by Warren Dobson

A country western musical comedy revue that’ll have you rollin’ and dancin’ in the aisles.

NOISES OFF!
DIRECTED BY JARRED CLOWES

Sept. 5th – Sept. 27th

The outlandish comedy portrays a director of a theatre company desperately trying to get his production together, despite the best efforts of the cast, the crew, and Lady Luck. We follow the production from final rehearsals, through opening night, and onto the tour: as with any group of actors forced to work closely together for any great length of time, romances and arguments are bound to break out. Quite often, what's happening on stage is nothing compared to what's happening backstage…

HIGH FIDELITY
DIRECTED BY HAL FRIEDMAN

Oct.10th – Nov. 1st

This musical based on the movie starring John Cusak, The Spotlight is happy to present this off-Broadway premier which follows the 'mid-life' crisis of Rob, a thirty-something record-store owner who must face the undeniable facts - he's growing up. In a hilarious homage to the music scene, Rob and the wacky, offbeat clerks that inhabit his store expound on the intricacies of life and song all the while trying to succeed in their adult relationships. Are they listening to pop music because they are miserable? Or are they miserable because they listen to pop music? This romantic comedy provides a touching and whimsical glimpse into the male view of the affairs of the heart.

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE
DIRECTED BY JUSTIN LAWSON BROOKS

Nov. 28th – Dec 20th

The Christmas classic comes to life on stage! George Bailey spends his entire life giving up his big dreams for the good of his town, but on Christmas Eve, he is broken and suicidal over the misplacing of an $8000 loan and the machinations of the evil millionaire, Mr. Potter. His guardian angel, Clarence, falls to Earth, literally, and shows him how his town, family, and friends would turn out if he had never been born.

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
DIRECTED BY HAL FRIEDMAN

Jan. 23rd – Feb. 14th

Taking place in New York City in 1922, this fantastic musical tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever. Based on the popular movie, filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess audiences will love to hate, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.

EDWARD ALBEE’S THE GOAT or WHO IS SYLIVIA?
DIRECTED BY JARRED CLOWES

Feb. 27th – March 21st

A bold new play by legendary playwright Edward Albee (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf), that concerns an architect that in the same week that he's received an international prize, been awarded a lucrative contract and celebrated his 50th birthday, finds he also has to confess to his wife and son that he's involved in a relationship which will probably ruin his life.

CAROUSEL
DIRECTED BY HAL FRIEDMAN

April 18th – May 9th

This classic musical takes place in a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, the swaggering, carefree carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, captivates and marries the naive mill worker, Julie Jordan. Billy loses his job just as he learns that Julie is pregnant and, desperately intent upon providing a decent life for his family, he is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life but Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day, while fifteen years have passed, he now encounters the teenage daughter he never knew. She is a lonely, friendless child, now Billy must repair in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity in a dramatic testimony to the power of love. It's easy to understand why, of all the shows they created, this was Rodgers & Hammerstein's personal favorite.

NEIL SIMON’S PROPOSALS
DIRECTED BY AMY HALL

June 5th – June 27th

Neil Simon at his best, this newest of plays written by the legendary play write will tug at your heart strings and send you laughing into the isles. Spend a weekend in the Poconos with the Hines family as the generations collide and love sends all into a dither. Full of vibrant characters and witty dialogue this play will be a joy to experience.

Puppet show to raise money for The Empty Space

Omnipresent Puppet Theater will perform its production of “The Three Little Pigs” as a fundraiser for The Empty Space Theatre in Plymouth Hall at the First Congregational  United Church of Christ at Real Road and Stockdale Highway at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 14.

Admission to the show is $3.00 per person.  There will also be a number of raffles, including a 26-inch mountain bike, an Omnipresent Puppet show for your birthday party or event, and tickets for the Bakersfield Condors.  Doors open at 12:30 p.m. All proceeds go to benefit The Empty Space Theatre.

The Empty Space, located at 706 Oak Street, is Bakersfield’s only theatre company that relies on public donations. Its purpose is to “keep theatre free,” giving people a chance to afford to see theatrical performances they might not be able to go to.  Among the productions in the theatre’s five-year run are Shakespeare’s Macbeth,  the musical Hair and David Mamet’s American Buffalo, as well as original plays written by Bakersfield writers.  It has played host to rock bands, improv and sketch comedy troupes, stand-up comedians, and Omnipresent Puppet Theater’s bi-monthly public performances.

In addition to its stage plays, The Empty Space has had benefits supporting such causes as the Kaiser Permanente Latino Association funding mentoring and scholarship programs, The Kern Lifeline Project-an AIDS program, The Bakersfield AIDS Project, Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble, and also worked with the Save-A-Teacher campaign to present The Miracle Worker at The Empty Space. For the past four years, the theatre has taken part in the Worldwide V-Day Campaign to end violence against women and girls, and has raised more than $14,000.00 for The Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault in that campaign.

Omnipresent Puppet Theater, founded in Phoenix in 2003, has been performing in Kern County since 2006 at local libraries, schools, and other community events, including functions for the Bakersfield Association of Retarded Citizens (BARC) and the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

Major League Improv

Saturday Nights at 6:00 PM

Major League Improv performs most Saturday nights at 6PM at the Spotlight Theatre.

What is improv comedy?

Unlike "Standup Comedy" in which one performer tells pre-planned jokes to the audience, improvisational comedy involves a whole group of performers making up scenes and playing games on the spot based on audience suggestions.

What is a Major League Improv show like?

A Major League Improv match features two teams of improvisers competing for laughs and points, with a referee keeping things moving and calling fouls. An average of seven to twelve games are played during a match, drawn from a repertoire of over a hundred improv games. In "Shakespeare" a team will improvise a scene inspired by an audience suggestion in Shakespearean style. In "Elimination Rap" players will create a rap on the spot, trading off each other's phrases, getting thrown out if they fall off the meter, or fail to rhyme. In "Forward/Reverse" the referee sends the scene back and forth at will, as though scanning a scene in a VCR, sending the players into a frenzy. Every show is different, with different players, different games, and different audiences supplying new suggestions.
