Make a difference

There are many more things you can do to make a positive contribution in the local theatre community.  Here are some ideas.

1.  See a show  This one is obvious.  Better yet, see lots of shows.  There is a wide variety of live entertainment in town.  If you want to encourage it, see a show every weekend or at the least every month.

2.  Tell them what you think  So you go to see shows but what did you think?  What did you like?  What didn't you like?  Talk to the actors after the show show is over.  Also, contact the theatre companies and let them know what you love seeing on stage.  You don't know how helpful this is!  Theaters need feedback from their public to succeed in bringing successful shows to life.  Contact information for local theaters is on our Theater Listing page, so get in touch.

3.  Branch out  Every theater in town has a big variety of entertainment to offer and you're really selling yourself short if you only go to one theater.  Broaden your horizons!  Try something new!  Check out some improv comedy, for example, such as Major League Improv at Spotlight or Blacklist at The Empty Space.  Not only will you grow personally but you'll be supporting the diversity of the arts community.  Seriously!

4.  Get involved  Contact a theater group and lend a hand, or better yet, audition for a show.  Take a theatre class at BC or CSUB.  You can learn how to direct or work in technical theatre.  The colleges produce student-directed One Act festivals.  Many theaters offer internships and training.  You can pitch a show at the Empty Space, or submit an original One Act play to BCT.  The local theatre community can be very welcoming, so let this be your personal invitation.

5.  Check out the arts  There's lots more art stuff going on in Bakersfield just waiting to be discovered.  Get out there!  Check out my local arts page for information.

Try these suggestions and you'll be on your way to becoming an official theatre addict.
