Rants, raves, and musings about the Bakersfield Theatre community by yours truly - a real life theatre addict
Theatre has been one of my favorite things to do for about ten years now. After graduating high school I fumbled through college a little bit, had a few strange and torturous jobs, and eventually got married and started my own business. The entire time I was doing shows: acting, running lights, designing sound, and of course watching tons of plays.
It became my obcession when my sister dragged me to an audition my junior year of high school. I was horribly shy and always frustrated. I'd ask someone to sign my yearbook and they'd write "you're so quiet that I hardly know you!" I was deathly afraid, I suppose, of being judged by something I said or did. So I was very guarded and introverted. That all changed when someone handed me a script and I realized the people in my high school drama teacher's classroom would not judge me because I
would be playing a character. I went nuts and have been addicted to theatre ever since.
In recent years I have climbed the ranks working behind the scenes at
Bakersfield Community Theatre. I joined the board of directors in 1999 and have served as president of the board for a number of years now. In that time I've worked on many shows that I am very proud of and directed two children's shows,
Cinderella and
Peter Pan. I have been webmaster of BCT's website, helped with the most sucessful show BCT has produced in the past decaded (
Rocky Horror), and generally lived and breathed community theatre.
(By the way, BCT has put Rocky on the schedule again for their 2006-2007 season, I am happy to say. I can't wait)To put it bluntly, I am exhausted. But still obcessed. So I need a new project, some new type of adventure to my put my theatrical energy into. Thus, behold,
theatreaddict.com. Tada. It's nothing special yet, I know. At the time of this posting it is just a basic site structure and me fooling around with the interactive portions of the site (the
blog which you are reading now,
discussion board, and
calendar). This site combines a few of my hobbies: theatre, web design, and journalism. I hope I can put my experience in these areas to good use to bring something special to the local theatre community.
So...this is my first blog post. Eventually, when the site is launched, I will be posting articles and pictures and all kinds of cool stuff here. You have to start somewhere though.
At this time I am on the board of directors at BCT until March, 2005. In April I will be done and by that time I should have the site completely designed and updated. Then, my focus in local theatre will shift to running the website, going to see shows, and posting new content such as pictures, interviews, whatever. We'll see what happens. That's all for now.
